Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego on Monday doubled down on her endorsement of Representative Ruben Gallego (D-AZ-03), her ex-husband, in remarks made weeks after an emergency motion was filed in a bid to seal details of their divorce case from the public.

Kate Gallego made her remarks about the endorsement of her ex-husband during an interview with KTAR News host Jim Sharpe recorded at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

“This is an easy decision for me,” she told Sharpe. “I mean, there’s very clear contrasts and I definitely want Ruben to win.”

Speaking of her relationship with Ruben Gallego, she told Sharpe, “Our most important relationship is as co-parents, that is always first. Being a parent is the greatest honor so I always want to deliver for our son.”

The remarks by Kate Gallego come just over one month after she and Ruben Gallego filed for an emergency stay in their divorce case from the Arizona Court of Appeals in response to legal efforts by The Washington Free Beacon to unseal the their divorce records.

In the outlet’s legal filings, the Free Beacon reported it argued “the atypical sealing of Gallego’s divorce records amounted to two politicians claiming privileges unavailable to the average Arizona citizen and that unsealing of the records is in the public interest given that Gallego and his ex-wife, Phoenix mayor Kate Gallego, hold public office.”

Political ads launched in support of Republican U.S. Senate nominee Kari Lake have highlighted the split between Ruben Gallego and Kate Gallego, who were considered a political “power couple” prior to their marriage’s dissolution.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) labeled Ruben Gallego a “deadbeat dad” who “walked out on his family, abandoning his newborn son, leaving his wife, and then marrying a D.C. lobbyist.”

Ruben Gallego and Kate Gallego reportedly first separated in December 2016, shortly before Christmas and after the birth of the couple’s son.

He has since remarried Sydney Barron Gallego, who works at the National Association of Realtors as the director of Government Advocacy. Sydney Barron Gallego’s account on the social media platform X reveals former associations with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Earlier in her KTAR News interview, Kate Gallego confirmed she will serve as a spokesman for the Harris campaign. She said Democrats view Arizona as “a real priority” and “believe the path to victory goes through Arizona, and specifically Maricopa County.”

The Phoenix mayor told Sharpe, “We expect to be a vital part of the path to victory again.”

Kate Gallego confirmed that she will seek another term as Phoenix’s mayor in May.
